The alienation migrant workers experienced in the United States paralleled similar tensions among and between Mexican rural elite and working-class families in Mexican society. The struggle against dehumanizing class tensions among and within Mexican immigrant families who had been left behind escalated in accordance with worsening US class, ethnic, and racial tensions, revealing the transnationality of both the workers’ vulnerability and their resilience. Like Mexican Americans, Mexican rural elite families developed a subset of discourses and initiatives to solidify class stratification and to protect their economic and social interests throughout the Bracero Program’s duration.

By investigating the Bracero Program experience in Mexico and the United States as a key component of an as yet largely unwritten transnational and gendered Mexican immigrant family history, this book does not conform neatly to the traditional linear teleology generally used to frame and investigate immigration to the United States, which posits a linear progression from immigrant settlement to inclusion in US society and full citizenship. The US government used program labor agreements to deny braceros and undocumented Mexican immigrants this trajectory.

They were warned that women’s desires for reunion could be interpreted as improperly challenging their migrant husbands’ judgments and intentions. It took great courage and considerable ingenuity and labor for these women to express and share their feelings of loss and longing. The Torres family portrait reveals some of the emotional issues confronting families during the bracero era. Thus it serves as a perfect cover illustration for the concerns in this book. 4 Veneranda used the portrait to express and share her feelings with Jesus.
